Monti: It is crucial for you to obtain a stable government

The crisis in the Eurozone, following the decisions on Spain but also the situation in Greece, was at the center of the meeting held earlier between PASOK president.

Mario Monti pointed out to Venizelos the criticality of a stable government in Greece which will negotiate at the Eurogroup on June 21 and the summit on June 28-29.

Their meeting lasted 45 minutes and Venizelos thanked the Italian PM for the assistance to Greece and described as excellent and vital Monti's proposal to organize an EU mechanism to guarantee deposits.

Venizelos described the conversation he had with the Italian PM as "useful and effective," noting that the Spanish example gives another dimension to the crisis which, as he said, is European and not only Greek, Portuguese or Irish.

At the meeting, the PASOK president stressed the need to review the adverse conditions of the loan agreement to break the vicious cycle of recession and reminded the points on which Greece insisted during the first phase of the several months of negotiations and as to which, as it turned out, "we were right. Now we can actually keep all the benefits of the loan agreement, the new program and the debt reduction, and move to arrangements and agreements which will allow us to finally get out of the memorandum and the crisis with an extension of the fiscal adjustment period and no further cuts in incomes, wages or pensions."

He estimated that there is understanding as long as our country has a comprehensive plan, political commitment and is able and willing to proceed with the reforms.

Lastly, he reiterated PASOK’s proposal for a government of shared national responsibility, without which we will not be able get out of the crisis.
