Kanelli: I was confronted with the political beast…

"Besides the economic crisis we also have a crisis in Democracy because the Greek parliament now includes people who will take the country 500 years back." These words were enough for candidate Golden Dawn MP Elias Kasidiaris to overstep the boundaries and attack Rena Dourou with a glass of water and a few seconds later punch Communist Party MP Liana Kanelli while trying to hit her numerous times.

The two women spoke to protothema.gr about this cowardly assault by the candidate MP, stressing that they were not surprised by his behavior. "Let me remind you of the saying 'homo hominis lupus'. Aristotle spoke of the political animal. Before me I saw the political beast. And I was not scared", says Kanelli, while declaring that she expected such behavior would break out at some point, even on a television show. "Will the wolf stop in front of the cameras; I can smell the wolves," she added.

Rena Dourou expressed a similar view: "It would have happened sooner or later, and it was already late. Besides, there have been similar incidents on web TV shows, but they did not get that far. I am not surprised by Kasidiaris’ behavior. We already know that their presence in society itself is dangerous enough. But the spotlight does not focus on the stabbings of immigrants, and there is a great ruckus because I was thrown some water. I wish we had not been justified when for so many years we had sounded the alarm. It's too late for tears now… when all those years we kept underestimating them. But even journalists turned a blind eye, some out of bewilderment and others due to personal interests. This has legitimized them and now they are feeling bold. They are in the Greek parliament."

However, Rena Dourou filed a complaint report against Kasidiaris, as his act constitutes an unprovoked practical defamation. Yet, Elias Kasidiaris is still wanted by the authorities.

Lastly, Kanelli told protothema.gr that: "Democracy is a difficult regime. I can stand it. The Golden Dawn members cannot"…
