“We are not discussing elections with Papademos”

After meeting prime minister Lucas Papademos, ND president Antonis Samaras appeared cautiously optimistic.

According to his colleagues, Samaras believes that Greece did what it had to do to advance the agreement with its lenders. However, the mechanism for monitoring the country that is posing a problem to the negotiations with Europe, has not been finalized. ND says they did not discuss the issue of elections in today's meeting.

The Germans demand more guarantees associated with the elections, while European capitals circulate the idea of extending Papademos’ government to implement the preparations for the full implementation of the agreement.

This means that the elections will be postponed from late April to late June, and since there are always delays, maybe for even later. For now, this possibility is blocked by Samaras, who warned yesterday that "after the PSI vote we must announce elections to avoid anarchy. The elections are a relief agent and will occur in a climate of normality to ensure political smoothness in the future."

Samaras' warning about "elections or anarchy" means that after the completion of the PSI and the vote on the loan agreement, he will withdraw his confidence in Papademos’ government. That is, of course, if he does not change his attitude after new pressure. Samaras wants to act before the new developments that will arise from the passing of the second memorandum on the political scene with the massive resignations of MPs from the two major parties, given that the vibrations will be transferred to society and will increase the political cost.

And he does not want to give time to his own expelled members, so that they can get organised and claim the anti-memorandum vote of the popular Right.
