"George, buy some time with Papademos' government…"

The extended presence of George Papandreou at PASOK's headquarters on Monday and his collaboration with senior party officials ignited rumors of an expected initiative on the issue of leadership within the next few days.

Papandreou even had an extensive private meeting with the party's secretary Michael Karchimakis, during which they seem to have discussed the time of convening the collective institutions and the agenda of the meetings.

Everybody expects the president of PASOK to initially convene the party’s political council to determine the next moves. It seems this meeting will inevitably come before the elections as some of the council’s members, and members of the national council, plan to ask for it through a written request.

However, the atmosphere within the party is heavy, especially after the conflicting estimates and rumors about Papanderou's intentions. If the president of PASOK does not clarify his goals, a crisis is very likely to occur, followed by a new round of public controversies, and also an escalation of departures from the party, as was the case with former secretary of Simitis’ governments, Nikos Bistis.

Associates of Papandreou request that he buys some time by any means, since political developments can be rapid and change the political landscape, such as the apparent extension of the mandate to Papademos’ government.
