A striking change in the daily lives of Greeks emerges from "routine" data - at least such is its nature during a recession period - showing electricity consumption for households and businesses.

As becomes apparent from the Monthly Energy Display on DESMIE’s site, the company that manages the electricity transmission system in Greece, during November electricity consumption increased by 7.27% annually, reaching 4, 25 million megawatt hours.

In fact, the increase in electricity consumption by households and businesses (distribution network), exceeds 9.3%, while it continues the downward trend (-3.6%) in the industries, which is also the norm during a crisis.

Essentially, it is the first time such a development has been recorded since October 2008. The only two exceptions were recorded in March 2010, as compared to March 2009 which had significant power interruptions due to the strikes of GENOP / PPC, and last August, a development that was attributed to the Greeks staying longer in the cities and villages without going on vacation, apparently due to the crisis on the islands.

PPC officials believe this development - which is not in favor of the state electricity company, since many of its charges do not cover the cost - is the result of reductions in consumption of heating oil, due to its significantly higher price compared to last year. It is more expensive by almost 15% both because of the increase in international prices and the raise in the special consumption fee since October. Thus, many households have turned to the use of other means, such as air conditioners, heaters, electric heaters, stoves, etc., believing that this will save money for their budget.

And, of course, people have become aware that an electricity bill can be delayed by almost three months, which is not happening with the supply of oil and communal bills, where those in a block of flats that cannot pay face the social factor of "isolationism "compared to those who are consistent in their payments.

But the data of oil marketing companies does not show such a decrease in heating oil consumption compared to other liquid fuels. And this can be explained by the smuggling of fuel which is …booming where the cunning are buying large quantities of tax-free heating oil and selling it as diesel fuel in order to reap the tax.
