Giannitsis "freezes" new electoral law

The issue of the election law was “frozen” at noon on Wednesday by the new Interior Minister, Mr. Tassos Giannitsis, in a discussion he had with accredited journalists in his ministry.

Mr. Giannitsis stressed the need for a consultation between the parties and a change in the electoral law, and that his intentions do not include such a change.

If such a question arises, Mr. Giannitsis added that it will be up to the government to decide. The Interior Minister stated that he had just received the bill the day before, which was prepared by the previous ministry leadership.

Regarding political incomes, Mr. Giannitsis made implications against his predecessor, Mr. Harris Kastanidis, admitting that he has not received anything relevant.

He noted that he was informed of a provision about politicians’ tax status, which had been introduced in the past.

When asked about elections, Mr. Giannitsis stated that they would take place when the work of the government is complete, while he also appeared positive about the 6th tranche. Finally, he announced that the program of self-management will commence on February 1st, 2012.
