I. Kapeleris suspected of non-collection of fines
Former SDOE head and general secretary of the Finance Ministry I. Kapeleris will need to give explanations to the prosecutor, as he is suspected of having committed a criminal act.

Mr. Kapeleris has been called to testify on the status of the suspect by the Deputy Public Prosecutor Spyros Mouzakitis, who shall first examine the circumstances surrounding the resignation of the Secretary of Information Systems, Diomedes Spinelis. The resignation of Mr. Spinelis, was linked by media to reports of “shady workings of the Finance Ministry, which prevented fine collection for smuggling fuel”.

Within the same press reports, there was mention of an “extremely urgent” memo issued by Mr. Kapeleris last August, in which he stated that there is imminent legislation on the issue of fines and requested the suspension of the collection of the relevant amounts.

Reportedly, these fines exceed 15 million euro and were established after cross-checking data from the HEPHAESTUS system.
