Winter setting around Greece

In various areas of the country winter has arrived, replacing the easygoing sunshine and bringing about low temperatures, snow falling in the mountainous regions and problems due to severe wind storms.

On Saturday morning, in the area of Chania on mountain Pelion, the temperature reached -3C while the snowfall continued through the night. The snow there is 15 cm high and due to lack of preparations in the prefecture, the road leading to Chania was completely blocked, leaving numerous travelers ‘trapped’ at nearby lodgings and unable to move their vehicles.

The prefecture of Karditsa also faces severe weather phenomena, with the area being enveloped in acute cold and the appearance of the first signs of snow in the mountains surrounding it.

The temperature in the region is 0C and drivers are facing difficulties on most traffic arteries. Snow chains are a necessary accessory for those driving in the area.

Problems on sea routes

Strong gales prevail in the seas too, creating difficulties and problems to shipping routes.

Piraeus routes to Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Hermioni and Porto Heli on hydrofoils have been cancelled, and likewise the ones to the Cyclades, as well as all itineraries from Prinos to Kavala.

Moreover, there are cancellations from Rafina port to all Cyclades ports.

There are no boats to Kea and Kythnos islands from the port of Lavrio either.

The National Weather Service has announced that the weather will get worse as we move into Sunday, so potential travelers should consult port services and their travel agents before their trip in order to avoid any inconvenience.
