Papademos, the new prime minister
Lucas Papademos is Greece’s new Prime Minister. After consultations between the outgoing Prime Minister George Papandreou, the leader of the opposition Mr. Antonis Samaras and the President of LAOS, Mr. Giorgos Karatzaferis, which lasted three and a half hours, President Karolos Papoulias gave a mandate to form a government to reputable economist Lucas Papademos.

The inauguration of the new government under Mr. Papademos - former ECB VP - will take place today, Friday the 11th of November, 2011, at 14.00.

The notice prepared by the three political leaders, Mr. Papademos and the President, read out to reporters by ambassador Konstantinos Bitsios, director of Mr. Papoulias’ office, is as follows:

“Under the chairmanship of the President of the Republic, Karolos Papoulias, Prime Minister Giorgos Papandreou, leader of the opposition Mr. Antonis Samaras, and LAOS president Mr. Giorgos Karatzaferis met today. The meeting confirmed the framework of principles formulated during the meeting of political leaders which took place on November 6th, 2011. It was agreed that the new government’s work is to implement the decisions of the 26th October 2011 Eurozone summit and also implement the economic policies related to said decisions. The President, on the proposal of political leaders who attended the meeting, instructed Lucas Papademos to form a government.

As is clear from the statement, "the new government’s work is to implement the decisions of the 26th October 2011 Eurozone summit and also implement the economic policies related to said decisions”. There is no mention of the timeframe during which the new government will remain in power. There is also no notice of an agreement between PASOK and ND for elections on the 19th of February.

The clarification as to whether Lucas Papademos’ new tenure will last until the 19th of February or extended as is necessary for the implementation of the policies associated with the October 26th decisions, is expected within the next few hours.

The first announcements by the new PM

"I accepted the presidential mandate upon the proposal by political leaders to form a government of national cooperation because I believe that everyone should contribute to addressing the crisis and economic recovery."

Papademos described the situation of the Greek economy, expressed the belief that Greeks will overcome the problems if they try in unity and prudence, and stated that he did not set any preconditions to the political leaders to create a transitional coalition government.

However, he explained that the " time for the elections is not precisely determined." It is assumed that the date for February 19 is no longer valid. That's because today's announcement by the political leaders states that "the work of the new government is to implement the decisions of the October 26 eurozone summit, and the implementation of the economic policy related to these decisions."

"It is a great honor and the responsibility that I am taking on os even greater. I'm not a politician but I have devoted my life to the pursuit of economic policy both in Greece and in Europe," Papademos said.

"The Greek economy is still facing problems. Greece is at a crossroads. The choices that will be made for its course will be crucial for the prosperity of the Greek people. The course will not be easy. But I am convinced that the problems will be resolved."

The authorized PM described the conditions for exiting the current plight: "If there is responsibility, consensus and caution, if we all give succor," and added that "it is important to form a government of national cooperation. The new government will be a transitional one carrying a specific task."

Papademos said he is "convinced that the country's participation in the euro area is a prerequisite for monetary stability. It is a measure of economic prosperity," he said and urged all Greeks "to be optimistic about the final result if we are united, determined and work closely."
