UPD:
Tonight's statement by government spokesman Elias Mossialos confirmed the reports for progress in the talks between ND and PASOK and that Papandreou and Samaras are close to an agreement on the name of the new prime minister.
"Today's meetings between the prime minister and the leader of the opposition, were made in a positive climate concerning the name of the new prime minister," said Mosialos. How on should interpret the reference to a "positive climate" is yet unknown.
Meanwhile, according to information broadcast by Mega channel, the representative of Greece to the IMF Panagiotis Roumeliotis was invited to Athens to inform the two major parties on the latest developments. His name has been heard since Monday afternoon as one being discussed for the position of prime minister.
However, both Papandreou’s and Samaras’ environments are maintaining radio silence. The effort by both sides is to seal the negotiation process and prevent any leaks.
Information that Papandreou and Samaras have come to an agreement on the name of the new prime minister is not confirmed by the government or the opposition.
A source with knowledge on the course of the talks told protothema.gr that developments and announcements will come on Tuesday. To our question whether a name of common acceptance has been identified to take Papandreou’s place, the answer was sibyllic: "It is possible."
