Living with the Australian dream
Australian authorities are keeping their two-day event organized in Athens by the Immigrant Department of Australia, meant to inform the Greeks who wish to immigrate to the distant country, a closely-guarded secret.
The events will not be covered by the press, while the time and place that the event will be carried out will only be disclosed to those who received an invitation to attend.
The number of Greeks interested in the event exceeded all expections from the outset, while the limited number of applications were exhausted within a couple of days. According to various sources cited by the expatriate Greek journalists in Australia, people interested were between 10000 and 12000, for the “first phase”. Please note that participation in information sessions does not necessarily guarantee a visa approval.
On the other hand, those who did not receive an invitation should not be disheartened or think that they did not qualify to apply for business immigration.
According to the Athens Australian Embassy, “although there is some increase in the interest of Greeks immigrating to Australia, there is no increase in the number of applications for professional immigration. The number of Greek immigrants in Australia remains minimal (about 100 people per year)”. It is stressed that there is no favorable regulation or quota for Greeks, but the country’s laws apply, as for any foreigner wishing to immigrate to Australia.
Australia needs about 180000 jobs each year to be covered by immigrants who have one of the 183 specialities in high demand. The relevant list is posted on the relevant Ministry’s website (www.immi.gov.au) and among others, it includes engineers, health professionals, automotive skilled workers, construction, electrical and mechanical engineering.
Furthermore, the conditions necessary to accept applications through immigration of skilled labour is the person being under 50 and speaking English.
