that 30,000 public servants are in excess and must leave within the next
three months.
What lies ahead and is seen as a problem though, is the fact that their dismissals must be arranged in a way which will not multiply the existing social unrest and generalized dissatisfaction.
Thus, between 18 and 20 thousand employees who are 12 to 14 months away from getting their pension will enter the labour reserve bank. Whoever belongs in this category will be free and eligible to get a job in the private sector.
Workers who are to be laid off after the layoffs of the 30,000 civil servants in total will receive reduced compensation. These will be the ones left without a working position following the closure of the organization they belonged to or after the merging of other public corporations, finally implementing the government’s latest decision on layoffs for the first time.
Leadership sources say that since the bank of the greater public services is a small one, then the reduction in the work force will be applied to all those meeting the criteria and working in the public businesses which are shut down.
Until now, the government has announced it will go forward with 150,000 civil servant layoffs by 2015, but experienced government officials are convinced the cap will be around 200,000.
The relevant ministers of administrative reform and finance made efforts to explain to the Troika inspectors that if layoffs go above the present ceiling, then the country might be unable to function as there will be gaps in key positions. For the moment, teaching staff remains untouched by the changes as Greek officials will do their best to man schools in remote areas of the country since they are not allowed to hire new professionals.
