Venizelos’ first meeting with the Troika after that night…
One of the Finance Ministers' hardest councils concerning Greece commences in Poland today, attended by US Finance Minister Timothy Geithner.
The climate for Evangelos Venizelos will not be the best, as it is the first time he will meet with fellow ministers after a particularly difficult week, during which the rumors that the Germans are preparing to "throw us out of the Eurozone" flared up dangerously.
Additionally, it will be the first time he will meet with the Troika auditors Thomsen, Masuch and Morse after that eventful night on Thursday, Sept. 1, when the two sides parted in not-so-friendly terms.
The thing is that the ice between them must break, as the auditors will return to Athens to continue discussions with the finance minister in view of the sixth tranche of 8 billion euros.
It should be noted that the Troika left Athens on that day mainly for two reasons:
- They strongly protested against the “discovery” of individual divergence in the pay scale for public servants.
- The government proceeded to hiring 16.000 public servants, thus violating the term on one recruitment for every 10 layoffs. Over the past months, some 30.000 civil servants were fired, therefore the government should have hired about 3.000.
Regarding individual divergence, it has already been removed, and the new hard pay scale will apply from October 1. In actuality this means that monthly salaries will be reduced by 40-50%.
In any case, the auditors will want to hear the new measures of the government for the budget of 2012.
