Government headache and election puzzles

High-ranking government ministers and the developments in the bank sector equal a resurgence of scenarios that speak of major political twists, even of early elections. Meanwhile, within the next few days, the government itself will try create a positive climate around the premier’s presence at the TIF, hoping that all mass protests will be under control and unforeseen situations will be prevented.

What has been interesting in the past days is that the leadership is discussing yet again the possibility of a coalition government, in a move triggered by the deal reached on education between the main opposition party, ND, and the one in power.

In statements to Proto Thema newspaper, leading ministers such Andreas Loverdos leave open the possibility of elections in the coming fall.

The estimations are such also after the merge-deal between the Alpha and Eubank banks. The creation of a “safety net” is producing hopes for a future exit from the crisis and will surely help the government during a potential election battle.

Nevertheless, the PM George Papandreou keeps saying a firm no to rumours connected to early elections.

For the moment he and his associates are highly concerned about the demonstrations in Thessaloniki and are to hold meetings within the week with his TIF presence as the sole issue on the agenda.
