A battle with wildfires on many fronts on Tuesday

The Fire Department is on high alert today, Tuesday, as fires have erupted throughout Greece, while the winds and the heat make extinguishing them even more difficult.  According to the FD, none of the fires are threatening any residential areas, but the work of the fire fighters is made even more difficult by the strong winds.

The fire that broke out on Monday evening at Vathi, East Mani, in Gythio, which also claimed the life of 49yo lieutenant Konstantinos Kastris, was brought under control at Tuesday afternoon. Fire fighting forces are present to put it out fully.

But the battle against the flames at Derveni, Arcadia, continues; the fire is receeding and the air fire fighting forces have left the area. However, because of prevailing winds, several fronts keep breaking out and powerful ground forces are trying to harness the fire.

A fire also broke out in a forest area in Korpi, Aktio/Vonitsa, in Aitoloakarnania. 15 men with 7 vehicles, a hiking team and a helicopter are trying to put it out.

Another fiery front has broken out at Korpi in Lefkada. 15 fighters with 7 vehicles, a hiking team and a helicopter are on the spot.

A new fire has erupted at the Farrai region in Erymanthos, Achaia. 17 men with 9 vehicles, a helicopter and 2 airplanes have joined the battle.

The fires that have broken out in Makri - Alexandroupoli, Stano - Amfilochia, Gavrolimni - Nafpaktos and Gianiskari - Achaia, are still in progress.

Fire fighters have managed to control the fire that broke out on Monday at a forest area in Vardali, Domokos.
