He was elected in parliament with PASOK from 1977 to 2000.
After the country’s accession into the then EEC on Jan. 1, 1981, he became a provisional member of the European Parliament representing Greece until it held its first European Parliament elections.
In the party’s cabinets that followed he held the portfolios of industry and energy (1981-82) and the one of industry, energy and technology in 1986-89, 1989-90 and in 1995.
He served as minister without portfolio in 1984, minister to the presidency of the government in 1989 and between 1993 and 94, minister of justice in 1995, and minister of health and welfare in 1996.
