Main opposition leader Antonis Samaras raised his voice, attacking both
the government and Papandreou himself, making it clear that ND will vote
down the bailout package when it comes to parliament, and accused the
leading party for trying to escape through early elections.
When mentioning Wednesday’s riots, he pinpointed the para-state tactics used by the government and turning to the premier, he said “you look too small”.
Speaking about the next batch, Samaras said that, in any case, “ND cannot be blackmailed. If the financial policy remains unchanged, we will vote it down while we will vote even if simple majority voting is decided upon, in case the economic policy is altered”.
“Hundreds of people took to the streets to demonstrate in peace”, said the ND president referring to yesterday’s clashes. “However, some hooded individuals destroyed the rallies. You failed to secure public order and protect people’s right to demonstrate. It would be much better not to say anything about the scenes we all watched on our televisions, which reek of of para-state activities”.
Also, he asked the premier and the relevant minister to give answers in parliament about what happened yesterday in the city centre, wondering how they can negotiate with the country’s borrowers when they are unable to tackle the rioters.
Referring to speculation that the Europeans reject ND’s positions, Samaras said, “It is the wishful thinking of Mr. Papandreou. The Troika has accepted our stance concerning the amendments”.
The ND leader clearly stated that the ballooning debt was a result of the handlings of all PASOK governments. Furthermore, he made clear he will vote for some of the implementation bill’s articles, mainly those having to do with privatizations.
