President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias sent a dual message to Ankara during his joint visit to the 114 Combat Wing with Minister of National Defense Evangelos Venizelos. Addressing the neighboring country, Papoulias stressed that “(Turkey) should know that we cannot be intimidated, it cannot create situations by violating our airspace or flying over our islands in ways inconsistent with international treaties”.

“Despite what was promised repeatedly by the Turkish Prime Minister, nothing has been done”, he stated, adding “it is better to spend a period of normal and good neighborly relations, which we have always strived for, especially when, acting as a Foreign Affairs Minister, I signed a Protocol with Mr. Yilmaz.

“(Turkey) is not doing this, and I do not understand it. This does not benefit anyone, least of all Turkey, which is attempting to continue with its EU entrance process into the EU”, he also added.

The President continued: “Also, on this occasion, I must state that it is incomprehensible, at this particular time when we face the destruction that has shocked everyone in Japan and worldwide, that Turkey wants to build its own nuclear plant on a seismic zone. This interests us greatly, since that location is straight across from the island of Rhodes. Mr. Erdogan must think this through, because Europe will intervene in order to prevent a possible future disaster in our backyard and our doorstep”.

On his part, Minister of National Defence Evangelos Venizelos stated that he briefed the President on the rapid developments in relation to Libya, after yesterday’s UN Security Council resolution. “Greece, as required, will fully respect and implement the decision of the Security Council. We will move within the framework of international and regional obligations. We therefore move within the NATO and EU plan. In any case, our forces have been present in the region for many days now, in order to support humanitarian operations”,  the minister explained.
