200-euro fine for those who don’t pay the toll fares
It will be a violation of the Traffic Code which will incur a fine of 200 euros, and possibly the withholding of the driver’s license, registration and licence plates, while refusal to pay tickets in urban transportation is reduced to a misdemeanor.
Through the regulation that was submitted in the amendment for urban transport reform, the ministry is admonishing the movement against toll fares, mandating that:
1) Avoiding toll payment «constitutes deviant behavior that impedes and adversely affects traffic flow, safety and the operation of transport facilities». The proposed provision comes under Article 29 of the Traffic Code, which regulates the movement of vehicles on motorways, expressways and tunnels. This way the police can interfere and confirm the violation.
Because part of the T.C. fines is assigned to the municipalities, when they’re not paid the driver will have problems with the IRS, as the fine is considered state revenue. The violation bears upon the owner, as well as the driver of the vehicle.
2) For passengers that don’t pay for public transport tickets, the violation is reduced to a misdemeanor and a 3-month term of imprisonment is enforced if the relevant fine is not paid.
For urban transport inthe year 2011, by decree, free transport or ticket prices reduced by 50% apply to certain categories of citizens: those over 65 years of age, children up to 12, special needs individuals etc.
