After long discussions with the heads of the universities, twho have managed to find a building to host the immigrants that are at the moment occupying the Athens Law School, the latter are not happy with the solutions that are offered and have not replied positively to the offer.
There are still discussions as to whether they will peacefully end their occupation in order to be transferred to a building secured by the Proctor and four NGO’s that were called to help out. The Proctor’s Office stated that “Although the conditions have not been the best, we have secured a building with the help of four organizations, the Red Cross, the Doctors of the World, the NGO of Peripheral Development of Mental Helath and the church’s NGO Mission, all of which - with the aid of the University of Athens - will help the immigrants settle in the building”.
At the same time, the Minister of Citizen Protection has declared that all actions will be legal but also the university asylum will not be diminished.
The NGO’s agreed but…
Last night after long meetings the University authorities came to an agreement with the NGO’s to transfer the immigrants to a building in the center of Athens the next day.
However, this morning the immigrants closed the central gate of the Law School and in their statements to the media they said they would not be leaving. A few moments ago, their official answer was no.
Furthermore, this morning the Proctor of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Theodoros Pelegrinis, visited the District Attorney of the Supreme Court, Mr.Ioannis Tentes. The meeting was fruitful as many sources say, and Mr.Tentes mentioned the very urgent investigation that will bring to light possible legal offenses of the university, and of the people that transferred the immigrants from Crete to Athens.
Also, it is clarified that should there be individuals found to bear responsibility or be suspected of illegal actions, they will be called in for questioning and possibly charged.
The Proctor mentioned that he was worried about a forceful removal of the occupants. The DA clarified that without permission from the Proctor that would not be happening.
The news have traveled all over the world and there are even news vans from South Korea in Athens!
The Prime Minister
Mr. Papandreou has requested an immediate solution for the issue, always within the law. He attacked the Left by saying that it is not right to be pleased with a solution which drags the name of the country through the mud abroad.
The Left
KKE and Syriza have respectively commented that “the governement needs to declare measures that protect the immigrants” and that “the immigrants are not to be blamed for the crisis”.
